Cannabis flower is perishable. Improper storage degrades THC into CBN, dries out terpenes, and can promote mold. Proper storage makes a noticeable difference in quality over time.
Four Enemies of Freshness
Light: UV rays break down cannabinoids and terpenes. Light is the single greatest degradation factor. Air: oxygen oxidizes THC to CBN and degrades terpenes. Temperature: high temps dry out cannabis, very low temps make trichomes brittle. Humidity: too much promotes mold, too little dries flower. Ideal is 55-62% relative humidity.
Best Containers
Glass mason jars are the gold standard. Airtight, no flavor transfer, easy to clean. Choose amber or opaque glass to block light. Avoid plastic bags (static pulls trichomes, not airtight). Avoid metal (can impart metallic taste).
Humidity Control Packs
Two-way humidity packs like Boveda or Integra Boost maintain specific RH levels. 62% RH is most popular for cannabis. Replace every 2-3 months when rigid.
Temperature
Store between 60-70F in a cool, dark closet or drawer. Not the refrigerator (fluctuating humidity promotes mold). Not the freezer (handling breaks trichomes).
How Long Does Cannabis Stay Fresh?
Properly stored: 6-12 months quality. THC converts to CBN at roughly 5% per year under ideal conditions. Terpenes degrade sooner, losing distinctive smell before potency.
Signs of Spoilage
Crumbles to dust (extreme dryness), musty or ammonia smell (mold), visible white/gray fuzz (mold, do not consume), lost aroma, harsh smoke.
