Light is the single biggest lever you control as an indoor cannabis grower. Get the schedule right and the plant tells you what stage it is in, when to stretch, when to stack flowers, and when to finish. Get it wrong and you end up with stalled veg, foxtails, or worse, a tent full of seeded buds from a stressed hermaphrodite.

Photoperiod vs Autoflower: Two Different Light Rulebooks

  • Photoperiod plants (most classic strains): These respond to the length of the dark period. They stay vegetative under long days and only flower when nights get long enough.
  • Autoflowers (ruderalis-influenced genetics): These flower based on age, not light cycle. They will move from veg to flower roughly 3 to 5 weeks from germination regardless of what your timer is doing.

This single distinction drives every schedule decision below.

The Vegetative Stage: 18/6 or 24/0

18/6 (Eighteen Hours Light, Six Hours Dark)

This is the workhorse veg schedule. Reasons it is popular:

  • Plants get a daily rest period, which seems to help respiration and root development.
  • Lower power bill than running lights nonstop.
  • Less heat to manage in the tent.
  • It pairs nicely with off-peak electricity windows.

24/0 (Lights On Around the Clock)

Some growers run 24 hours of light. It can speed up early growth and prevents any chance of accidental flowering signals. Trade-offs: higher electricity cost, more heat, more demand on ventilation.

A middle ground of 20/4 is also common with no real downside.

Callout: Seedlings are not delicate flowers. Young cannabis seedlings handle 18/6 just fine. Just keep the light far enough away to avoid bleaching.

The Flowering Stage: 12/12 Is the Universal Trigger

When you are ready to push photoperiod plants into bloom, you flip the schedule to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness. Within roughly 7 to 14 days of the flip, you will see preflowers form at the nodes, the plant will enter the stretch phase (often doubling in height), and pistils will begin to develop.

When to Flip: Height, Not Calendar

Because plants typically double or even triple in height after the flip, your flip timing should be based on your space.

  • Short tent (4 ft of vertical room above the pot): flip when the plant is roughly 12 to 16 inches tall.
  • Medium tent (5 to 6 ft): flip at 18 to 24 inches.
  • Taller spaces or sativa-dominant genetics: you have more runway.

The Biology: Phytochrome and Why Dark Matters More Than Light

The reason 12/12 works comes down to a pigment in the plant called phytochrome. Phytochrome exists in two interchangeable forms (Pr in red light, Pfr in far-red). When that conversion has enough time to complete each night, the plant reads it as a long night, which signals fall, which signals flowering.

The critical word is uninterrupted. Even a brief flash of light during the dark period can reset the phytochrome state.

Light Intensity (PPFD): How Bright Is Bright Enough

  • Seedlings and clones: 100 to 300 PPFD
  • Early veg: 300 to 600 PPFD
  • Late veg: 600 to 900 PPFD
  • Flowering: 800 to 1100 PPFD (with CO2 supplementation, 1200 to 1500+)

Spectrum: Blue in Veg, Red in Flower

  • Veg: Cooler spectrum (around 5000K to 6500K equivalent) encourages tight node spacing.
  • Flower: Warmer spectrum (around 2700K to 3500K equivalent, plus far-red) promotes stretch and dense flower stacking.

Dark Period Light Leaks: The Hermaphrodite Risk

What counts as a light leak:

  • The little blue or green LED on a power strip, fan controller, or humidifier inside the tent.
  • Tent zippers that do not seal properly.
  • A hallway light bleeding under a door.
  • Checking on plants with a phone flashlight during their night.

Repeated or significant light leaks during flower can trigger hermaphroditism, cause foxtailing, or reduce bud density.

Timers: Set It and Verify It

  2. Weeks 1 to 4 (veg): 18/6 at 300 to 600 PPFD, blue-leaning spectrum.
  3. Pre-flip check: Measure plant height, account for stretch, confirm headroom.
  4. Day of flip: Switch timer to 12/12, increase intensity toward 800 to 1100 PPFD.
  5. Weeks 1 to 11 of flower: Maintain 12/12 with zero light leaks.
  6. Harvest: Some growers run 24 to 48 hours of darkness right before chop.
