Identifying the sex of your cannabis plants is one of the most important skills for any grower. Female plants produce the buds you want to harvest. Male plants produce pollen sacs that, if allowed to open, will pollinate your females and cause them to produce seeds instead of potent, seedless flower. Removing males before they release pollen is essential for growing high-quality cannabis.
When Sex Becomes Visible
Cannabis plants do not show their sex during the seedling or early vegetative stages. Sex becomes identifiable during the pre-flowering stage, which typically occurs 4 to 6 weeks into the vegetative growth cycle or when you switch the light cycle to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness to induce flowering.
Pre-flowers appear at the nodes, the points where branches meet the main stem. Look closely at the junctions between the stem and branches, particularly at the upper nodes of the plant. You may need a magnifying glass to identify pre-flowers in their earliest stage, as they start very small.
Identifying Female Plants
Female pre-flowers appear as small, pear-shaped structures with two white hair-like pistils emerging from the top. These pistils are the earliest sign of a female plant and are unmistakable once you know what to look for. The structure is called a calyx, and the pistils are the reproductive organs that would catch pollen if a male were present.
As flowering progresses, female plants develop clusters of these calyxes that form into the buds you recognize as cannabis flower. The pistils start white and gradually darken to orange, brown, or red as the plant matures. A plant covered in swelling calyxes with visible pistils is definitively female.
Identifying Male Plants
Male pre-flowers appear as small, round, ball-shaped structures on short stalks at the nodes. They look distinctly different from the pointed, pistil-bearing female pre-flowers. Male flowers do not have pistils. As they mature, these round structures grow into clusters that resemble tiny bunches of grapes hanging from the plant.
When male pollen sacs mature, they open and release fine yellow pollen that can travel significant distances on air currents. A single male plant can pollinate an entire room of females, ruining an entire crop. This is why early identification and removal are so critical.
Hermaphrodite Plants
Some cannabis plants develop both male and female reproductive organs, a condition called hermaphroditism. This can be caused by genetic predisposition or environmental stress such as light leaks during the dark period, extreme temperatures, nutrient imbalances, or physical damage.
Hermaphrodite plants can develop pollen sacs alongside female flowers. These plants can self-pollinate or pollinate nearby females, resulting in seeded buds. Inspect your plants regularly during flowering for any male flowers appearing on otherwise female plants. If you find pollen sacs on a female plant, you can carefully remove them with tweezers, though heavy hermaphroditism may warrant removing the plant entirely to protect the rest of your crop.
Using Feminized Seeds
Feminized seeds are bred to produce only female plants, eliminating the guesswork and the risk of males appearing in your garden. They are produced by inducing a female plant to produce pollen, which is then used to pollinate another female. The resulting seeds carry only female genetics.
Feminized seeds are more expensive than regular seeds but save you the time, space, and resources of growing plants that may turn out to be male. For home growers with limited space, feminized seeds are typically the most practical choice. Autoflowering feminized seeds add additional convenience by flowering automatically based on age rather than requiring a light cycle change.
What to Do With Males
Remove male plants from your growing area as soon as you identify them. Do not wait. Cut the plant at the base and remove it from the room in a bag to contain any pollen that may have begun to develop. If you are growing outdoors, remove males at least a few hundred feet from your female plants, though even this distance may not prevent wind-carried pollen from reaching them.
Some growers keep male plants for breeding purposes, but this should only be done in a completely separate, sealed space with its own ventilation system. Pollen is remarkably persistent and can travel through air ducts, on clothing, and on tools. If you do not intend to breed, males have no value and should be removed immediately.
